The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
