Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if progress is being made or imploding.

Cancellieri's Surprising Presence

A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team without replacements.

He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
