British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
