EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
