The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader started showing everyone his plans for a lavish reception room twice the size than the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to build it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis forecast his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with the government.
We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the world' to 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to witness the leader try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who should not find it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to evade covert authorities. The child matures in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for other people, specifically for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Jesus of the gospels advocates for a type of radical love focused on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Highest Among Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the determined opposition against Trump arise in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and calls to the finest aspects in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you welcome them and welcome him or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, in other words, by reference to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected by relationship to elements that cause it to be distinctive and beautiful, which is the example of Christ. In both situations does it suggest feigning the most negative about the nation and religious tradition was nonexistent; it represents both meekness and conviction, a combination that committed American Christians should embrace.
