Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific calls made by the official, following the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
